During a recent interview, our own Janine Severyns discussed the home design process and described a recent project where she worked with a builder creating a welcoming environment in a three-bedroom duplex that has an open kitchen and family room layout.
Who is the target buyer for this home?
“The target buyer is probably a first-time home buyer or someone in their late twenties to thirties, perhaps starting a family or with young children.”
What kitchen cabinets did you choose?
“We chose a semi-custom line of Siteline Cabinetry. They manufacture quality cabinets with updated finishes, at a great price point. We wanted a neutral space that wasn’t boring, something light and fresh feeling with color selections that fit a wide palette.”
How did you decide on the overall look?
“There’s a slight coastal influence, the space has clean lines and nothing fussy or objectionable. We added corner floating shelves in Thermally Fused Laminate (TFL) using an Aria door finish, which repeats in the master bathroom. The island chandelier and rustic flooring add extra visual interest to the space. We wanted the entire home seamless in color selection, so the master bath repeats the Aria finished doors. The bathroom features both door and drawer storage, as well as a tall linen cabinet, and double sinks. The second bath features Willow finished cabinets using a Walton door style, carrying the theme from the kitchen island. The soft green creates a retreat-like atmosphere.”
.
What universally well-liked features are included in the design?
“This space has a lot to offer. The kitchen functions well with a great work triangle and island seating that’s out of the way of the cook. The combination of cabinets and shelves gives the kitchen some character while providing both storage and an area to accessorize. We added a much-needed tall pantry storage cabinet to the left of the fridge, which slid the fridge into a reachable location from the stove and island.
When designing the layout of a kitchen keep the needs of the user in mind. Everything should be planned from food storage to cooking areas, and make sure there is plenty of countertop space. This kitchen also has a pull-out trash cabinet and additional storage on the inside of the island.”
Does quality matter?
“In many affordable new homes, buyers are seeing entry-level cabinets that may not have the quality they expect. At Kane Home Cabinetry & Design we incorporate quality, functionality, and beautiful design in all of our projects. Our end goal is to stand out from the competition by providing unique designs constructed with excellent materials.
Finding the right balance between function, features, look, and price is a difficult job whether working with on new construction or renovating an existing kitchen or bath. Every buyer has different priorities and tastes, which makes designing both tricky and interesting.”
Having years of home design experience helps Janine and Kane Home Cabinetry & Design pinpoint the correct balance between current trends and the timeless style that buyers desire.
